Scripture: Exodus 19:1-6; 20:1-2
The Ten Commandments have become a familiar cultural and religious touchstone for consideration of the moral guidelines that serve as the foundation for people and communities. But, are the individual and collective demands of these commandments written so long ago binding on the complex moral dilemmas of our present world? Is there a timeless wisdom here that can help us address the range of moral dilemmas that divide and confound us? Every day, we contend with the unequal distribution of the good of the earth; violent conflict and confrontations among the nations of the world; the competitive human drive for material well-being and transcendent meaning; and the often reckless human drive to achieve, accomplish, perform, and possess. Perhaps, applying the moral guidelines of the Ten Commandments in our time and context may offer us new opportunities for reflecting on and building communities of justice, wholeness, and righteousness.
